Confrontation and Smiles

Continuation of the last message. September morning the 2nd. Anyway, this street that I’m on the last two days visited by 95% people working in New York and 5% tourists.

I’m outdoor all day shooting and after last week and this week there’s a couple of people that I now recognize like a man or a woman who I photographed two or three times because they’re very good outfits or very good looking and they stop and say, “What the hell are you doing?” They start off very angry and I explain to them that we’re Portraits of New York. We’re covering 36th Street in the next two weeks. And it really winds them down. It’s a good system.

What I like about that is I get a chance to say, “Can I please get one pose from you?” A lot of people don’t like posed pictures but I like doing a little portrait right there. I call it a street portfolio, street portrait. I do two or three pictures and they’re all pretty good.

I personally give them a card and I think they go to the site or their friends go the site. It’s a way of maybe getting 10 customers a day to go on to the site just to see what’s going on. I like that.

But there’s a bunch of angry people that just walk by and give me the finger very quickly or they hide and they cover their face like I’m some kind of a pervert on the street. That’s the downside to being on a local street. Like yesterday, this gentleman I photographed – he goes, “What’s your fuckin’ problem?” like I was stalking him or something.

Anyway, signing off.
