Well, it’s Saturday night. I just did Thursday, Friday and Saturday , I did about five parties and photographs in New York – three days, three nights in New York City.
But I’ve got to tell you, this morning was funny as hell. In fact, I did a blog right after but I didn’t discuss what happened.
Coming out of Penn Station I hear a commotion. Some big, giant White guy, 6’7″ with no shirt on, he’s screaming at this Black lady about $10. Everyone has their phones on video. For some reason, there weren’t any police there. I’m there all the time – Penn Station – there’s police everywhere but for some reason, I don’t know why, there wasn’t a cop within a block radius. Maybe there’s about 50 or 75 people with their phones videotaping this and they start arguing and arguing and they were all higy from the night before.
So a small man who doesn’t like the big, tall White guy – he takes a karate stand and throws a kick at this guy. The big guy backed up and after the guy threw the karate kick, he runs at him and he punches him right in the head. He got to jump up in the air. The big guy falls down, everyone’s videotaping and of course I’m taking photographs like crazy. And then one of the gang guys starts telling me, “Why are you taking pictures? Why is everyone taking video?” Anyway, it was a riot. It was like two people screaming and they were saying filthy words. I can’t even say them on the blog. But that was Saturday morning this morning.
I really want to talk about something else. I’ve been complaining about the big guys in New York City that I’ve been trying to capture. These are big, tough, mean guys, big tattoos and flashing a camera in their face really pisses them off. To some of them, I don’t even attempt to take a picture because I see such anger behind them.
Something I realized that I’ve been photographing I guess for 35 years portraits or whatever and I became a professional face reader. Kind of like a mind reader because I believe these tarot card people, these gypsies – they’re great face readers. They can hit you with a statement and look for your facial reactions. So, I just study faces all day so I could tell the real dangerous ones. A funny thing is if you go to SalsImages.com my grandfather’s older brother…

I wanted to mention how exhausted I am. Three night of parties and three days of photography in New York. Physically, mentally exhausted, I guess I’m getting old now being 55 years old.
Anyway, what I was talking about is my gift of studying faces of people not to photograph because of an attack or some type of anger problem they have. I think I’ve picked this up from my great uncle Sal. This guy was my grandfather’s older brother and back in the 20’s and 30’s, he was booked as the world’s youngest mind reader. His name was in neon in three different clubs – Chicago, New York and New Jersey – the great Saltarra. He went with a bunch of different names.
Anyway, if you go to SalsImages.com you can read about him. He is a funny guy… but when he did this mind reading act, he would study facial expressions. I worked for him back in the late 70’s in Key West. Either I have it in my blood or I picked it up from him but as a photographer in the early years, I learned what to do. Maybe in the last three or four years, I’ve learned what not to do.
Anyway, it was an exciting three days but I am tired. I just made a big lasagna with my sons so they can have lasagna tomorrow and Monday and I’m going to crash. Goodnight.
